Didn’t (doesn’t) matter. In that it happened, people took the necessary precautions for their children, THE most important job as a parent. If the “tradition” could be replaced as I described (church/ school trunk or treats, etc) and the kids have a great time, why not?

Ah but the time honored tradition (at least where I grew up) was to tailgate into a gated community, where legend says they give WHOLE candy bars.
