The “pony” meme has been widespread on the left and predates Obama (“let’s invade iraq and we’ll all get ponies!”).

One of my favourite blogs has satirically nicknamed Obama the “Magical Unity Pony” or “M.U.P” to mock all the people who believe that Obama is some kind of saint or savior.
