I’ve often wondered how people get so weird as well, I’m of the opinion that it starts the first time you deny something factual because it doesn’t fit your intuited worldview of the moment.

Some people are just born contrarians, their first instinct on being presented with any new idea is to adopt an opposing point of view. This differs from critical thinking in that it stems from the personality type, asserting independence by rejecting anything they perceive as trying to tell them what to think.
