Very well-said. I used to work with kids with autism, and they displayed just as wide a variation on personality and self-knowledge as ‘ordinary’ people.

I would note that a lack of functional empathy— as in, difficulty in perceiving other peoples emotions— is part of the autism spectrum. But you’re quite right that that doesn’t amount to an actual lack of empathy.
