The Wall Street Journal reported today that all “state offices will be closed Monday” in Alabama in order to celebrate the birthday of Jefferson Davis, the executive of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.

Jefferson Davis: “All property is best managed where Governments least interfere, and the practice of our Government has been generally founded on that principle… . What is there in the character of that property [slaves] which excludes it from the general benefit of the principles applied to all other property.”
