Once you acknowledge that asylum seekers are not “illegals,” then you begin to lose the whole “legal vs illegal” moral argument. And that’s what they fear most, not being able to argue that they’re totally cool will legal immigration, but we need various draconian measures to stop “illegal” immigration.

Which distinction the Trump-humpers and Wallnuts are probably never going to make, as the fundamental opposition to “illegal immigration” is, for a disgracefully large segment of the electorate, rooted in racist-prejudicial opposition to ALL (non-white) immigration. A subtext which most of the political and news media tend to figleaf with terms like “nativism” or “nationalism” - when they just don’t elide over it entirely….
