Yes, there was a problem of some kind a while back and I removed that option to fix it; don’t remember why, offhand.

It was handy, especially when things are moving fast, like during debates, speeches, pressers, or when someone is catching up on threads and dinging a lot. I know we can freeze it, but meh…it was useful being able to toggle it off & on. Ah, well…
