One of the scarier realizations I’ve had as an adult is that most terrible people get away with things not because they’re discrete, but because the vast majority of people want to avoid feeling uncomfortable. Not-seeing and not-hearing things that should demand scrutiny and disrupting normal social interaction is a practiced skill. And when money’s on the line, it’s an absolute necessity that you just go along.
