The key thing to remember is how the Bush Administration acted when they lost the popular vote in 2000, and only won because of Nader voters/butterfly ballot/SCOTUS/better post-election strategy in Florida. Cheney said, “We thought about that, but then we said, ‘We won’.”

And the Dems played ball, at least at first. Conversely, when Obama reminded them in 2009 that he won, they decided to shit on everything for seven years. I’d become much less partisan during the Bush years, but that was one of those moments - when McConnell actually said in a press conference that his top priority was making sure Obama was a one term president - that I was ready to tell the GOP to go fuck itself.
