My theory is that the Russians started by grooming and recruiting Trump.

And they took the kompromat they gathered on Republicans over the course of the campaign hacking incidents (remember, the RNC was hacked, too) and gave it all to Trump - who is hanging it over their heads.

That said, there is a certain level of complicity between the Fundie/Dominionist wing and the Russians. But I think that many Rs are going along with this shit because they don’t want to be ruined by whatever Trump’s got on them.
