I thought about editing to reflect that. He was too cautious on the field of battle because he hated killing his soldiers. That took a different kind of strength than he had.

It was also that McClellan had the bad luck to face several Confederate generals who were better than he was. Defeating the likes of Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in battle was a tall order for any general.

Overall, McClellan was measurably better than Lee on matters of logistics, and was even somewhat better in terms of overall war strategy. But Lee was a good deal better operationally, and tactically he was miles ahead of McClellan.
