What transformed Colorado Springs from nice little town into a Holy Roller Empire was Family Research Institute and Focus on the Family moving in.

I didn’t really know about the fundy take-over of the area until about 2000, when my nephew (then 13) told me that his middle-school science teacher was an outspoken (ie very stupid) young Earth creationist. I was astonished since I had not been there in 30 years. He said, “Oh, yeah, lots of teachers here are Bible thumpers. They’ve like taken over since I was in kindergarten.”
Focus on the Family had moved to Colorado Springs from Pomona, Ca in 1993.
