Actually, I’d not be surprised if he were right. Why? The assault weapons ban of 1994. It was a really badly written piece of feel good legislation that named a number of specific models of firearms and then also named a number of physical features which somehow magically made a firearm more dangerous without talking about the one thing that really did make them more dangerous - large capacity and quickly changed magazines. When they did talk about magazines, it was separated from the real issues with AR type or so called Assault Weapons.

It has been claimed, and I believe it, that the 1994 bill banned nothing (because it took 5 seconds to slightly change a weapon and give it a new model name ) and that it prevented no crimes.

It’s not popular to say this here but this is why anti-gun people need to understand gun terminology better. If you do, you can avoid the loopholes that made the 1994 bill so utterly worthless. I’d rather spend the political capital of getting something passed that will actually do something positive.
