This is where I put on my fandom hat and remind everybody that authorial intent… is not the be-all and end-all of a film’s “meaning.” Also novels, poems, paintings, music, etc.

The audience sees what they see, feels what they feel, and the meaning they ascribe to the work is every bit as valid as the meaning the work’s creator was trying to convey.

99.9999% of the time I would agree, but fuck the incels.
