And once he had that mass of delegates, the GOP leadership was powerless to stop him for fear of totally alienating its base. It had made a deal with the Devil and he was calling in his casino chips.

And once he started piling up delegates, the pressure on the other candidates to change the dynamics of the race increased. And none could do it. The highly touted GOP field—even I thought it was a pretty strong cast, on paper—turned out to be a bunch of empty suits. Cruz was the most ideologically conservative candidate, but Jeb and Rubio were probably the best two candidates to over take Trump. But Rubio turned out to be out of his league and Jeb was probably just running to continue the family business.
