the nuances are beyond them: there is the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and there is the civil status of marriage. There was a time when the two were identical, over recent centuries the two have diverged, and the key point is that the Sacrament is personal and subjective and any person or church can refuse to grant or accept that status between two people for any reason.

But in our country (and most of the rest of the enlightened and civilized world) marriage is a universal human right between any two adults, regardless of gender.
