I was dirt poor for about two years, living in the Tenderloin in San Francisco. It was humiliating on a daily basis. Living in terror of any, any, any unexpected expense, because every dollar I had coming was allocated anyway.
I hope I never get complacent enough to forget what that was like, and fool myself, like so many assholes these days, into believing people live in luxury on welfare.
