To me though it’s a simple issue in the end. She’s a secular official who happens to be religious. If SSM bothers her so, that’s her right but she can’t continue to keep her positon and also deny people something that is legal. If we allowed any clerk to do that, we’d open up an ugly can of worms. Saw an article by Ca’s Lt Governor and former SF mayor, Gavin Newsome who wondered how they’d feel about a Quaker clerk or any other pacifist religion who denied a gun permit based on that religion’s pacifism and opposition to violence.

And this whole lot about “obeying the laws of God rather than the laws of men” is taken way out of context. The Bible never says that going against secular law is a consequence-free choice. The Bible also indicates clearly and in rather strong terms that we are to obey the secular authorities because God allows them to exist.
