I just think it’s not just that he was an outsider that allowed him to get away with it. I think that really gives a way out to the media ignoring his racism because they feared how uncomfortable white audiences are actually candidly talking about race in this coutnry.
NYC looks like a big city; it’s really 1000 small towns superimposed on each other. And the “national media/network headquarters” small town thought they knew him. The sorts of things he said at rallies… he didn’t talk that way at cocktail parties. He was a guy with pretty good TV ratings, at all the parties, on page six on a regular basis, his books sold pretty well, his name was plastered on buildings all over town, he was a cultural phenomenon… they just didn’t judge him by the standards they’d bring to bear on somebody they knew as “political figure”.
