I wondered the same thing about educated blacks living in the South in the early part of the century. Why didn’t more go to Europe like so many performers did?

I’m certainly glad they stayed, I don’t think I would have. I can’t imagine having to be that tough.

Abandoning the place you grew up is not something a lot of people want to do. Many do, but many don’t. And many would like to but can’t for all kinds of reasons.
