Speaking of useful, are there any good ways to distinguish benign visual symptoms from the more serious possibilities (detached retina or stroke)?

I first had one of these when I was young enough that my (rather stupid) response at the time was along the lines of “I’m too young to die or go blind, lets see if it goes away”. Since then, I’ve used pattern matching to self-diagnose, which is hardly ideal.
