The GOP basically have no way to sell Kavanaugh’s nomination other than a charm offensive. They can’t really tout his record because they’re working so hard to keep his record hidden and he keeps dodging questions on his record, which the same reason they can’t really sell him on his personal views because they’re working to keep as much of that hidden as they possibly can. So what’s left is “He’s such a nice guy,” which is aimed more at making their fence-straddlers feel okay about voting for him than actually selling him to the public. The party leadership is prepared to gamble their Senate majority on getting Kavanaugh seated before November.
