It will probably sound as a dumb question, and it probably is, but we’re talking American politics, so here goes: is having the last name “Castro” a political minus (for obvious reasons)?

Honestly, not so much. Their political opponents might make a few cheap puns, especially if said political candidate is a Democrat; but generally, most negative name recognition in the US comes from US politics. Unless your name was, say, Stalin, that guy’d be right out.
