It didn’t help matters that France was already eaten hollow by the far right during the 30’s. There were members of the French military, most notably Petain, who were fascist sympathizers.

Reading an alternative history, or rather speculative history, book dealing with scenarios involving major turning points of WWII, starting in ‘38 with the lead-up to Munich. Folks never realize just how possible it was, in the years leading up to the war, that Hitler might have been deposed or even assassinated and the whole thing avoided.
