A musalla is a temporary place where people congregate to perform prayers when there is no dedicated masjid (mosque) available, whereas a masjid is a permanent place that built by a community with the intention of it being there long term to serve the community (for the daily congregational prayers, Friday sermons, weddings, celebrations, etc.)

So the “prayer space” at the Pentagon is basically a musalla, whereas the “prayer space” at Park51 would be a masjid.
