re: #331 Lidane

I read books on Kabbalah back when Madonna was first making a big todo about following it. What I read and what she talked about were so different that I just laugh when I see those red string bracelets.

It takes a real foundation of Judaism and of Hebrew studies to truly understand Kabbalah. It’s why I never pursued it as anything other than a curiosity.

The thing is that Torah is complete as it is. Kabbalah isn’t really needed. It just brings in an added depth that to me (and I don’t know a whole lot, just a little bit) makes it that much more interesting and intriguing. My mom has been studying for a long time. The New Age mishmash tries to touch on it and if you know any of that or “spiritualism,” it would probably not be hard to understand Kabbalah if you’re not Jewish. Does that make sense?

The problem I have with Berg or Madonna’s brand is that it’s all about talisman’s and superstition. Run your hands over the pages of the Zohar and you automatically absorb its “protection.” It’s snake oil.
