I’m wondering if it’s a variation of the self-immolations that are nearly impossible to stage on the Square itself. There are security checks at every entrance and police confiscate all liquids — even water bottles. But Tiananmen Square is bordered on all four sides by major traffic arteries, and the entrance to the Forbidden on the north side makes a suitable spot for a “statement.”

But I’m just speculating. Authorities here have made no announcements about causes of the explosion or the identities of the car’s occupants.

It’s not a self-immolation, I assure you. Those are intended to kill the doer only and Buddhists would actually regard it as vile if such an act killed other people.
