It took me some time to explain to my grandmother and mom that South America is a very diverse region. They weren’t being bigoted. They were just unaware of how many different groups have called South America home over the centuries.

One of my co-workers is Venezuelan, from German heritage. He came to the U.S. and finished high school in Cleveland, where the other students first assumed he was from France because of his accent, and when he corrected them, decided he should be called Jungle Boy because South America.
