I was in agreement up to the point of bias in favor of the project. If anything, the bias should be towards cutting it, with the objective of the committee being to find reasons not to do so. If they fail to do that, while in the process bringing down costs and pushing up delivery times, then the program automatically gets the axe.

The thing is we’ve sunk in so much money already, and like I said, I think getting a big-war system into service is important. But we can compromise and say ‘no bias’. I can deal with that.

It’s the commission outline that’s truly important. Because no matter what, the F-35 program is a mess and fixing it will result in job losses. Thus we need a decision body that will focus on big picture, because in many cases Congress really can’t. If their constituents shout, “They’re tryin’ to take ma’ job away!” a Congressman has to try to intervene. If they were to support a job loss in their district, they’d be booted in the next election. Thus the BRAC-type commission.
