There’s a significant indication that this guy deserted his unit. Whether he did so because he had PTSD or for some other reason is an open question. The army is opening an investigation and I think they should. But the circumstances of his capture are independent of the question of whether you get him back or not. I don’t think we leave our own behind, even if they did desert.

The course of action seems pretty clear: you get him back because that’s what we do. Then you investigate whether he deserted and punish him if he did. These are not incompatible ideas.
