Actually they don’t have to support him.

Like Nixon they could just take it on the chin in the next election (which looks increasingly likely) and retrench their politics.

They support him not because they are afraid of their voters. They support him because they want to support him.

It’s like when Michael Steele found out his party was full of racists at CPAC when CPAC’s own organiser said the mistake in hiring one of their most successful chairs was “he’s black.”

They support him because they need that 30% block of knuckle-draggers to ensure a majority. If they turn on Trump, they will lose that and have nothing to build from even after a defeat.
