I don’t think he’s trying to reach across the aisle. I think he’s talking to Democrats that are fearful of the us-against-them talk coming from other Democrats. And they exist. They could agree that if Republicans oppose important measures Democrats should go ahead but still believe that the rhetoric doesn’t need to come from our party.
