Probably had sleep apnea.

There’s a number of different theories as to why he (and some other Colonials) did this, varying from trying to avoid noxious fumes they thought were given off by the stoves of the time to aiding digestion, to simply being more ‘wakeful’ so if they had good ideas in the middle of the night they could leap out and get to work. As far as I know, there’s scant primary evidence to help settle the question.
