I put them through hell— a penniless Yankee draftee, college dropout, Catholic. (He had already tried to get me busted for dropping her out of airplanes.) We settled in to 40 years playing Archie and Meathead. Things got cool after the second or third kid.

My parents lived together for a year before they got married (early 1950’s). My grandparents never knew that. Never. Even 40 years later, grandma and grandpa still believed that when mom moved to another city to be “near” dad, she lived at the YWCA. It wasn’t until all my grandparents were dead that mom and dad would admit out loud that she just used the Y as a mail drop.
