On the one hand you have the Nixon known for his anti-Semitic tirades and listing of Jews in the Department of Labor; listing of big Jewish donors; and siding with Billy Graham regarding Jews in the US: “This [Jewish] stranglehold has got to be broken or the country’s going down the drain.” Nixon, apparently delighted, asks, “You believe that?” Graham replies, “Yes, sir.” Nixon replies: “Oh, boy. So do I. I can’t ever say that but I believe it.” But then he is credited with saving Israel in the Yom Kippur War.

Can I point out that none of his anti-semitism was known publicly until the tapes came out… it only affects people’s view of him in hindsight, not from a 1972 perspective. (um… same also goes for his choices during the Yom Kippur War).
