I was behind a judge dropping a child off at school today and it got me to thinking. Why are judges and representatives/senators given license plates stating their jobs? I understand why firefighters and other emergency workers need them on their private vehicles—in an emergency, they need to be waved through any kind of line ASAP.

But, why judges and elected officials? I cannot think of a single emergency to which they must respond quickly. Why not give them some sort of sticker for their windows or, the plate itself? What is so special about those people?
