Yeah, it’s funny, as I think I’ve remarked before; my wife is part Roma, and she does charity work for Roma causes and I obviously advocate for them as well, but she’d be absolutely shunned in Roma society, and if she were a pure Roma woman she’d never have had the opportunity to become a doctor. Roma society is incredibly misogynistic; it’s frozen where it has been since the pre-enlightenment times, because the Roma weren’t really invited to participate in the Enlightenment.

The solution will be slow; it’s a similar solution to what needs to happen in many Middle Eastern countries. It requires a building of trust and the revolution of Enlightenment values working inside that culture. There’s no way to— or good to— preserving Roma culture as it is now, but they deserve their chance to have their culture transformed by it.
