Part of the reason for the gun-free zone is that there are enhanced penalties imposed. In Iowa for instance, violations of gun-free zones is to double the penalties otherwise imposed.

The penalties are part of the deterrence effort.

If your goal is murder, I doubt the effectiveness of the deterrence.
