Neat note about Houston rather its namesake Sam, Sam Houston was a Unionist who warned against secession in 1860-61.

Sam was an interesting guy. Nearly got lynched when he said he wasn’t for secession. Only two counties voted against: Travis (Yo!), and Gillespie (county seat Fredricksburg) where the population still remembered the German civil wars and wanted nothing to do with it or with slavery. Many died at the hand of Confederates who, such as the Nieces Massacre, thought of them as foreigners.

History may not repeat, bit it surely echoes.
