Realistically, if your computer is less than around 3-4 years old, and doesn’t have an SSD, this is the single biggest performance increase you can make.

It’s also worth checking to see if your computer has an M.2 / PCIe drive slot that was never used. That will give you another massive boost over a SATA connected SSD. My Dad’s old 2013 27inch iMac has one that I’m going to use to upgrade his computer for Christmas. The only annoying drawback is that because of the iMac design this is going to involve a near total teardown. I might just pay my local computer tech to do it for sheer peace of mind and so I’ll have someone else to blame if it gets fucked up.
