A quarter century ago, I wrote a Doctor Who fanfic about a Cold War era alien invasion of Mayberry (with the serial numbers filed off), focusing heavily on the unspoken dark side of what living in Mayberry culture during that time would entail. I also had a burnt-out, vacationing Rod Serling analog break down in town and the Goober and Gomer anologues cheating him on car repairs. The Floyd stand-in was a paranoid Bircher. “Barney” was a fascist, and “Aunt Bee” had a terrible secret in her past.

I grew up in a similar culture post Civil Rights Act when my area had been only a very few years away of being made up largely of truck farmers. I do not romanticize the Andy Griffith Show.
