It’s been happening for a while. The theory is that you’re protecting kids from child molesters and similar creeps. That may be true, but you’re also discouraging many would-be volunteers who just don’t want the hassle.
There’s an FBI file on me. An angry litigant whom I embarrassed in court called the FBI and said I was part and parcel of my client’s alleged fraud. I went to see the local FBI agent, who confirmed that they open a file for every complaint, but assured me that the complaint in my file had been labeled crackpot.
So the thought crosses my mind when I think about volunteering for a church job that involves contact with kids, and for which a background check is necessary: do I really want that exposed? Answer: nope.
