That fox story was in the news not too long ago.

The genetic evidence that dogs are just domesticated wolves looks now to be a sealed case. There was some question about whether other canids were the source, but the latest I saw sounded pretty firm that genetically they are wolves.

Wolves are interesting in that, before humans came to NA, the wolves won the contest for top predator, beating the saber tooth cat. The pack instinct is an evolutionary winner, as not only wolves but other species have shown.

I don’t know if scientists will ever be able to determine exactly where the wolf was first domesticated. I suspect it was in the Levant during the last great glaciation, because it would have taken so many generations to make the domesticated animal that already shows up in the very earliest part of civilization.
