Had the arrestor system not been in place, the plane would have gone into Flushing Bay, and the outcome would have been far more serious for those on board. The Port Authority was among the agencies involved in creating the EMAS system, particularly after several planes have crashed after overrunning the runways at PA airports (JFK and LGA).

Images I’ve seen lead me to believe they were landing on runway 22, which means they were stopped from running into the Grand Central Parkway.

I believe this was shot from the west side of the airport, near the old Marine Air Terminal access road
