Pretty much the entire Middle East is a construct of the Post WWI breakup of the Ottoman Empire . The French and British carved up the region, exerting control over different portions, and giving their favored groups the ability to run the region in their name - the Hashemites in Jordan, Saudis in the Arabian peninsula, etc., the French in the Levant, etc.
