General Electric has the biggest legal department of any corporation in the world.

They also pay zero or negative taxes.

Basically, it is more profitable for them to hire another lawyer than to hire another engineer, staff or production line worker

For a couple of years during the downturn, GE made more money in tax planning moves than they did making tangible goods (like generators, engines, etc.). They’re very good at it too.
