There is no right or wrong with parables. They’re simply stories. Whether or not you believe in Jesus (I sure as hell don’t), you can’t dismiss the parables themselves out of hand. They’re no less valid than the stories and myths of other cultures, whether they be Native American parables about Coyote and the Spider Woman, or Inuit stories about salmon and bears, or Greek myths about the sometimes questionable behavior of their gods.

You’ve just committed a “use mention error” by mixing belief in the veracity of the stories of faith with belief in “the stories”. For example, an atheist can believe in the “concept” of a god, but not believe in a god.

Sure, I believe in the parables too, but I don’t think they are true.

As long as parables are simply stories and not monikers of the tenets of faith, then why don’t we all pray to Beowulf for saving us from Grendel?
