I can’t even count how many times I heard that growing up, especially when people realized I’m Latina.

“Oh! I thought you were [Italian/Greek/Romanian/etc.]. You don’t have a Mexican accent at ALL!”

One time, in the taxi, this Hispanic guy (native Texan judging by his accent-) gets into my car at the airport and tells me his address. As we head towars the freeway I ask him, “Would you rather take route a-b-c or route x-y-z?” He turns to me with a totally WTF look on his face and deadpans, “Well I’ll be damned—that’s one HELL of an accent you’ve got there!” Then we both cracked up.
