I would not be surprised at all if some type of “accident” didn’t occur to KJ-3 during the next year. I think he truly believes that they could win a war, and is willing to have his country die trying. I’ve felt that his father KNEW that they would be crushed, but was a master at dancing at the edge of the line.

What I’ve read agrees with your analysis. China is seriously worried about North Korea either coming unglued or starting a war, neither of which China wants. Thus they’ve been trying to reign North Korea in, to which Kim Jong Un responded by executing one of their biggest supporters within NK. He’s made it clear he’s not willing to listen to reason.
