There’s also nothing new about this practice. In Minnesota, it’s been a long-standing tradition that if you want to get rid of something, but not necessarily throw it out - i.e. an otherwise functional item that might see use in another family (especially true of kids’ toys) - you set it out on the curbside a few days before trash pickup. If it’s still there on trash day, away it goes.

Before the pandemic, the end of each semester had a ‘couch day’.
